Poetry Out Loud

A Yerington teenager will represent Nevada in a national poetry recitation contest in Washington D.C. while an Elko High junior swept second place in the recent competition. Garbielle Hunt has represented Lyon County for three consecutive years in the statewide contest, Poetry Out Loud. The junior at Yerington high won the Nevada title Saturday at KNPB studios in Reno. Elko High School junior Cache Black finished second in the program – he is pictured with local artist Gail Rappa of Tuscarora who serves on the Nevada Arts Council. Douglas County High junior Lea Gifford was third in the contest. Hunt earned a $1,000 prize and another $1,000 for her school to support literary programs, along with the trip to the national competition where she'll compete for $50,000 in scholarships and school prizes April 26-26. Hunt finished second in Nevada last year and fourth as a freshman in 2015.
