Bragging Rights For Unable Stables
Tuesday, September 7, 2010 - Bragging rights are in for 2010 as the winning stable of the Nevada Blackjack Challenge met in the winners circle following the final throoughbred race of the Elko County Fair. Of the seven horses entered, the prize goes to Unable Stables with a win by seven-year-old Edlos Twist. Fred Davis is the Racing Announcer. The Nevada Blackjack Challenge includes dozens of owners who each buy a piece of the syndicate action. The effort began as a way to stimulate attendance during the pari-mutuel racing at the Fair.

Alum and retired EHS principal, Moyal Kump is looking forward to getting re-acquainted with his fellow classmates. The reunion will be next Thursday and Friday, wrapping up Saturday morning at the Kiwanas Buckaroo breakfast in the city park.

Horse Races Begin This Weekend

The NRCHA race has been run in Boise for years but politics in the Gem State hs forced orgainzers to find a new home for their racing events for this year at least. The Elko County Fair horse racing gets underway this Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, then picks back up over Labor Day weekend also.

Wells Has 21-Hour Power Outage

5 Arrested In Drug Bust
Thursday, August 20, 2010 - A joint criminal enforcement operation by members of the Sheriff's Department, Elko and Carlin police and the Elko combined Narcotics Uit arrested five individuals on charges related to the drug bust. Elko county Sheriff Dale Lotspeich used the use of a telephonic search warrant was employed to execute this operation.

Local Nurses Vote To Strike
Thursday, August 20, 2010 - Local nurses who are members of the Service Employee International Union working atthe Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital voted overwhelmingly to give SEIU leaders authorization to call a strike if a fair contract cannot be reached. According to the union press release, late yesterday afternoon, if a strike is called, this vote confirms that NNRH nurses are ready to do what it takes to improve patient care. Nurses at NNRH have been in negogotiations with NNRH management sice November 2009 and have presented reasonable proposals. The union says NNRH continues to ask nurses to make outrageous concessions which would decrease standards patients deserve. The union continues to say that in 2009 NNRH here in Elko made 26 million dollars in profits and is on track to record even more profits this year. More than 94 percent of nurses voted to reject the proposal from NNRH which included a threat to raise member healthcare costs by 14 percent and a wage freeze.

National Director Coming To Fire Science Academy
Tuesday, August 17, 2010 - The Fire Science Academy will host the Deputy superintendent of the National Fire Academy on Wednesday to meet with Nevada National Guard representatives and others working toward co-locating a national emergency response center. Accident At Barrick's Meikle Mine
A recovery effort and investigation continues at the Barrick Goldstrike's Meikle Mine after an early Thursday accident near a hoist in the mine's ventilation shaft. Operations at Miekle Underground have been suspended and all other mine workers have been accounted for as spokesman Lou Schack describes. Meikle is the largest undergound gold mine in the country and recently received several safety awards for operations in the North American Region. State and federal mining regulators are on site along with company officials to investigate the accident.

Drug Bust In Spring Creek, Mother Arrested
Thursday, August 12, 2010 - A Spring Creek mother and three other people were jailed after drug busters with Nevada Division of Investigation and the Elko County Sheriff's Office served a search warrant at a Holiday Drive residence and found four children inside a hime filled with garbage, rotting food and dog feces. Elko County Sheriff Dale Lotspeich said a small amount of suspected marijuana was found along with loose pille. The children range in age from one to fifteen.

Recovery Operations Underway At Barrick's Meikle Mine
Barrick Mine Rescue crews responded to an incident at the Meikle Underground Mine in Elko County this morning. The incident occurred about 1:15 a.m. and invloved two miners. All underground operations at the Goldstrike Mine were suspended pending an investigation. A recovery operation is proceeding under the direction of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) officials. Barrick's management team notified the family members of the missing miners this morning. The initial investigation is focused on a hoist in the mine's ventilation shaft. "While we don't have all of the facts at this point, what we do know about the incident is not encouraging," said Greg Land, President of Barrick's North America Region. "We are working with MSHA as the recovery operation continues." Underground operations at Goldstrike have ceased and will remain so as the recovery and investigation proceeds. Barrick will provide additional information as it becomes available.

Dog Beaten By Owner
Monday, August 9, 2010- A Spring Creek man was arrested after beating his dog multiple times. The man was given a warning beforehand, but continued to abuse his dog. Elko County Sheriff Dale Lotspeich says the dog and her puppies are being kept at the Elko Animal Shelter as evidence in a criminal case. In the mean time, they are being nursed back to good health.

Commissioners Meet With El Paso
Wednesday, August 4, 2010 - Elko County Commissioners will send a clear message to El Paso Gas that while the board supports the developemnt of the Ruby Gas Pipeline, they want the Texas corporation to back out of any deal to give money to Western Watersheds Project to retire grazing permits on public lands. Commissioners approved a resolution during Wednesday's regular meeting oposing the controversial payout in which El Paso agreed to donate 15 million dollars to the Idaho conservation group along with five million to the Oregon Natural Desert Association if the groups would drop their protests. The resolution sets the tone leading up to a meeting in Salt Lake City next week to include represenatives from as many as nine impacted rural counties as well as El Paso and other interested parties including the Nevada Cattlemen's Association as Executive Director Meghan Brown explains.

County Gears Up Over Pipeline Concerns
Monday, August 2, 2010 - Last month, the El Paso company that is in the process of installing a natural gas pipeline from Wyoming to Oregon and through Elko County, paid Western Watersheds Project $20 million dollars to allegedly not stop the process of the pipeline construction. County commissioners and others involved in the process are furious over the settlement that could impact ranching here in Elko county. Elko County Commissioner Demar Dahl attended a meeting in Ely on Friday and met with El Paso do disuss the issue. The Elko County Commission will take up this issure in a proposed resolution during their regular meeting this Wed. Aug. 4.

Former Nevada Governor Guinn Dead
Thursday, July 22, 2010 - According to News 10's Jon Ralston, former governor Kenny Guinn has died. He was 73.
The circumstances of his death are unknown at this time, but it is being reported that he fell off the roof of his Las Vegas home.
Kenny Guinn was born in Garland, Arkansas, in 1936 and grew up in Exeter, California.
He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Physical Education from Fresno State, and has a Doctorate in Education from Utah State University.
Guinn and his family moved to Las Vegas in 1964.
From 1969 to 1978 he served as Clark County Superintendent; from 1978 to 1993 he served as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of several major banks and utility companies in Southern Nevada; and he was appointed Interim President of UNLV in 1994.
Kenny Guinn was elected the 28th governor of Nevada in 1998 and was re-elected for a second term in 2002.

Rescue Helicopter Crashes Near Angel Lake
Monday, July 19, 2010 - Three Elko firefighters and a local pilot escaped serious injury when the Bell Long Ranger helicopter they were riding in crashed shortly after resucing a stranded rock climber at Angel Lake. Lt. Marv Morton with the Elko County Sheriff's office said the exact cause of the accident is under investigation. Pilot Dale Coleman of El Aero was transported by Summit Air to the Northeastern Nev. Regional Hospital with what was described as lacerations to the head. The firefighters were expected to be treated for non serious injuries.

Thursday, July 15, 2010 - A smoldering fire in a mountain of garbage at the Elko City Landfill had bulldozer operators and firefighters on overnight duty. Deputy Fire Chief Mike Hecht said anyone driving by around midnight could not have missed the ornage glow and flames coming from the municipal landfill just off Lamoille Highway.

I-80 Drug Arrests
Thursday, July 15, 2010 - Drug busters with the Elko County Sheriff's Office arrested a California man on suspicion of several counts after a traffic stop on I-80 near Wells. Deputies recovered packaged pills worth several thousand dollars.

Open Burning Is Now Closed For The Season
Thursday, July 15, 2010 - Fire season has officially arrived with a few small sized brush fires already reported this season and now - with persistant hot, dry and windy conditions - a ban on open burning is in effect throughout the area. Tom Turk, with the Nevada Division of Forestry, says the imposed restrictions apply to burn barrels and piles to begin with but could be expanded if necessary.

Ruby Pipeline Project Gets Final Approval
Wednesday, July 14, 2010 - It's an important step ahead for an energy pipeline development across northeastern Nevada with a BLM Record of Decision inked just this week. Elko District Manager ken Miller says there are still regulatory requirements to be met, but a major hurdle for the Ruby Pipeline has been realized with the document signing. The natural gas pipeline is set to originate in Wyoming and crosses Utah and Nevada before terminating in Oregon.

Among the highlights of the event that began with Old West Championship Bronc Riding and Calcutta Thursday, the Silver State Stampede Queen and her court, these hard-working ladies helped make the rodeo a hometown success. The Silver State Stampede has been voted Best Medium-Sized Rodeo in the Wilderness Circuit.
